Photoluminescent Signs

Photoluminescent signs are designed to remain visible in low-light or emergency conditions by absorbing and emitting light.

These signs help guide people safely during power failures, smoke conditions, or reduced visibility situations.

We at Foamex Printing Company supply a range of photoluminescent signs and photoluminescent safety signs designed using recognised layouts and high-contrast printing.

Types of Photoluminescent Signs

Different types of photoluminescent signs are used depending on emergency requirements and building layout.

Photoluminescent Fire Exit Signs: They are used to clearly indicate escape routes during emergencies.
Glow in the Dark Fire Exit Signs: They provide enhanced visibility in dark or smoke-filled conditions.
Photoluminescent Exit Sign: These signs help in guiding occupants toward exits when standard lighting is unavailable.
Glow in the Dark Exit Signs: Such signs reinforce evacuation routes with improved visibility.
Photoluminescent Fire Signs: These signs are used to identify fire safety equipment and emergency instructions.

In evacuation routes, signage may also be displayed alongside a fire exit keep clear sign to ensure pathways remain unobstructed.

How Photoluminescent Signs Work?

Photoluminescent signs absorb ambient light from natural or artificial sources and then release it gradually in darker conditions.

This glow effect allows photoluminescent safety signs to remain visible without requiring electricity.

This makes them especially useful for emergency routes, stairwells, corridors, and areas where visibility may be reduced during an incident.

Materials, Printing, and Finish Options for Photoluminescent Signs

Our photoluminescent signs are created using rigid Foamex board combined with glow-in-the-dark finishes. This ensures both structural stability and visibility in low-light conditions.

The material performs well in indoor environments where light exposure allows the signs to recharge effectively. High-contrast printing ensures photoluminescent fire exit signs and glow in the dark exit signs remain easy to recognise.

Here are the available materials, fixing, and finishing options:

Self-adhesive backing or pre-drilled mounting holes
Multiple standard-size options
High-contrast printing for improved visibility
Photoluminescent coating for glow-in-the-dark performance
Matt or gloss finishes
Layout adjustments depending on placement requirements

These options allow photoluminescent exit sign formats to be adapted to different environments while maintaining consistent visibility.

Further material guidance can be found in resources such as choosing the right fit foamex thickness.

Where to Use Photoluminescent Signs?

Photoluminescent safety signs are commonly used in areas where visibility is critical during emergencies:

Emergency exits and escape routes
Stairwells and corridors
Commercial buildings and offices
Industrial and warehouse environments
Public buildings and facilities

Proper placement of glow in the dark fire exit signs helps ensure safe evacuation and clear direction.

At designated gathering points, signage is often supported by an Assembly Point sign for clear post-evacuation guidance.

UK Compliance Requirements for Photoluminescent Signs

UK regulations require safety signage to remain visible and understandable in emergency situations.

Photoluminescent signs must follow recognised formats, colours, and pictograms to ensure clarity.

Using consistent photoluminescent safety signs supports compliance by improving visibility in low-light conditions.

Proper placement ensures exit routes and emergency instructions remain accessible during power failures.
