Fire exit hanging signage is not automatically mandatory, but it is required where wall-mounted signs cannot be clearly seen. UK fire safety law requires all escape routes to be properly signed and visible at all times. In large spaces, open-plan layouts, or areas with shelving, racking, or crowds, suspended signs are often the only way to meet this visibility requirement and pass fire safety inspections.
Hanging emergency exit signs do not always need to be illuminated, but they must remain visible in all conditions. In areas with limited emergency lighting, photoluminescent or internally illuminated signs are recommended to maintain visibility during power failure or smoke conditions.
